I was born in 1980 in Mumbai, India. I grew up observing my Artist parents in their art studios. I watched them draw, paint, experiment. I watched them step back and squint at their processes and creations. It was intriguing and captivating. As a child I loved drawing superheroes and science fiction. My dad also an Art professor, would sometimes say, ‘Bah, that is not Art.’ I didn’t believe him. His students believed anything and everything he said. They were in awe of him. When I was growing up we had all kinds of Artists folk at home all year round. I often had to give up my room for them to stay over. I didn’t mind. They were all interesting and brought with them ideas and concepts that were sometimes inspiring. I would hear them debate about Art, what is Art and what isn’t Art. Again I disagreed, I thought everything is and can be Art. I didn’t want to be told this is the ‘Right’ kind of Art or the ‘Wrong’ kind of Art. Ironically my Art is quite influenced by my dad’s art and his way of painting. Although the thoughts and feelings behind my paintings are, I believe the polar opposite.
For me it is the meditative, therapeutic joy of creating something. The forms and colours that flow when I paint elicit various emotions. They help me balance the emotions pooling around in my being. Emotions elicited from my various experiences and responses to people and events.
I live and work in Edinburgh.
